Our youth leadership programmes are delivered through a variety of structured learning and outdoor activities including tramping and team building activities. The facilitation of the programme is enhanced with our facilitators delivering learning and role modelling to their younger peers.
The YMCA is the only provider of extensive Youth Leadership Training in Southland. It is providing high quality training and offering an internationally recognised qualification.
Our young people leave our programmes with the skills to move into adulthood and become active citizens contributing to our society. Our community is enriched by the positive contributions of young people.
Help young people to strengthen their character through service to others. Expose them to career opportunities in science, social services, and the environment field through action projects, community partnerships and networks. Stimulate expansion of Youth Leadership Programme (YLP) and Raise Up locally by creating quality programme models and developing a network of support and shared experience
Through the programmes the student’s learn to understand the concept of values. They learn the values of the YMCA, honesty, respect, caring and responsibility. It allows them to examine their own values and consider the values of others and how they influence and are a foundation for positive behaviour and action.
The young people in our programmes volunteer their time to community events and organizations. The students have continued a rat control programme at Thomsons bush to do pest eradication, participated in tree planting and native bush rejuvenation, done monthly rubbish clean ups, partnered with Department of Conservation to do track maintenance on the George Sound track. They are required to complete 60 hours of community service at Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Award (DOE) gold level, 30 hours at silver level.
