The Y has a great team of youth workers, who work alongside young people and their whanau to help them achieve their goals. They create positive and trusting relationships with those they work alongside.
The team accepts referrals from a number of community organisations and has capacity to work in a one-on-one and/or group mentoring settings. They work alongside schools, police, Oranga Tamariki and other social service agencies, wile being heavily involved in other areas of the Y such as youth development, education and health and fitness.
Our youth workers work with young people to identify opportunities and experiences that align with their strengths. Providing non-judgemental support and encouragement can empower young people to achieve success as defined by them. The young people our team work alongside show real gratitude for our youth workers and build a relationship based on trust and understanding that enables the young person to flourish.
“The best things I have done with my youth workers was learning to weld with Kendall and fishing with Tarryn. We also did baking and cooking which is fun. I now want ot be a welder and I am allowed to go back to the workplace when I am older to get a student job. I liked that I get to do lots of new things with someone different to my family. The Y is very good and I’ve had two amazing people to work with.”

“I loved going out fishing with Tom and learned a lot of new skills when it comes to tying knots and catching fish – I caught my biggest trout with Thomas. He helped me through family problems at the bad times. I would highly recommend Thomas to other students, he was very helpful and guided me in the right way. The best thing about working with Thomas was the laughs we had and how I could talk about anything with him.”
